Water Conservation

Many people don't realize how important water conservation is, particularly during times of rain or snow melt.  This is true whether you live in a community with a combined sewer system or a separated storm system. This is due to the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant.  Even the smallest rainfalls can cause the wastewater treatment plant to exceed its capacity.  When this happens, the plant must discharge dilute raw sewage into the Rouge and Detroit Rivers.  If everyone reduced their water usage during rainy weather we could reduce the frequency and amount of sewage discharges into our local waterways.  So the next time it rains think twice before running the dishwasher, doing a load of laundry, or soaking in tub.  If you can hold off a few hours, please do...you'll be helping to keep sewage and other pollutants out of the Rouge and Detroit Rivers.
