New School Workshops

New Teacher Orientation — teachers only

Registration:  FREE

This workshop is required for teachers new to the Rouge Education Project and recommended for veteran teachers who would like to share their experience.  Come and learn about the resources available through the project and network with other teachers.  This is a great opportunity for teachers to have questions answered by project staff and others.  Featured speakers will include Joe Rathbun, an environmental quality analyst with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, who will speak about what schools monitor and what the data mean, and Dave Bydlowski, a consultant with the Wayne County Math and Science Center, who will speak about how to meet the Michigan Curriculum Framework Science Benchmarks through the Rouge Education Project.  Most new schools will also receive their monitoring equipment at this workshop.

Project WET workshop: Teachers Only

Registration: $30 per teacher

Limit: 20 Teachers total

Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) is a K-12 interdisciplinary, active approach to watershed education. The Project WET Workshop is an exciting, engaging and powerful learning experience. Educators of all disciplines will receive the latest Project WET materials and will learn to teach water education activities and walk away inspired. Participants will receive the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide containing nearly 100 activities that can be incorporated into the Rouge Education Project. Project WET's goal is to facilitate and promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and establishment of state and internationally sponsored Project WET programs. Continuing Education Units may be available for this workshop.

Certification Workshop: LaMotte/Hach---teachers only

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Registration and light breakfast 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.  Lunch also provided.

Dunckel Middle School, 32800 West 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48334

Registration:  $36 per teacher: FREE for New Teachers

Learn about water quality monitoring with new and veteran teachers in the project.  This hands-on workshop covers all the water quality monitoring tests that schools will conduct on their field trip to the Rouge River on monitoring day.  Participants will learn how to conduct chemical tests using LaMotte test kits, conduct a physical stream survey, and complete a biological assessment of aquatic macroinvertebrates (such as aquatic insects).  Special emphasis will be placed on data calculations and what your results mean.  Continuing Education Units may be available for this workshop.

LaMotte/Hach Water Quality Monitoring

Registration:  $36 per teacher, $12 per student, parents free: FREE for New Teachers

Limit: 2 students and 2 parents per school

This workshop is a great opportunity to have student and parent leaders trained who can assist you in training your class in water quality monitoring.  This hands-on workshop covers all the water quality monitoring tests that schools will conduct on their field trip to the Rouge River on Monitoring Day.  Participants will learn how to conduct chemical tests using LaMotte test kits, conduct a physical stream survey, and complete a biological assessment of aquatic macroinvertebrates (such as aquatic insects).  It is recommended that new teachers to the project attend the Certification Workshop: LaMotte to become familiar with monitoring techniques and then attend this workshop with parents and/or students to reinforce what they’ve learned.  Continuing Education Units may be available for this workshop.

Limit: 1 class (approx. 30 students) per school, space is limited so register early!

This culminating event of the Rouge Education Project will engage elementary school students in a series of fun, hands-on activities that will benefit the Rouge River watershed and increase students' understanding of watersheds and the water quality data they’ve collected.  Students may create displays about their experience with the river and bring them to the event.  All participants should bring sack lunches.
